Purpose:
To orient the learner to the concept of community in public health, the processes of Community Assessment, Asset Mapping, and Health Impact Assessment, resources to aid in conducting assessment, and the benefits of assessment to public health practice.
Target Audience:
Public health nurses in Wisconsin
Objectives:
After completing this course, the learner will be able to:
- Define “community” in the context of public health practice
- Identify social, economic, and environmental determinants of health and understand their impact on behavior and health
- Identify key principles of data collection, documentation, and dissemination and resources to assist with each of these processes
- Distinguish between Asset Mapping, Community Needs Assessment, and Health Impact Assessment and identify the benefits of each process to public health nursing practice
- Describe the importance of completing assessments with community partners and identify components that make collaboration effective
