Helping students learn clinical knowledge & expertise

Purpose: This module will highlight the manner in which clinical expertise develops in nursing. Further, you will be assisted in identifying teaching/learning strategies to help students advance their level of professional practice. Finally, you will learn the skills of clinical thinking, and how to develop those skills in students.

Objectives: Upon completion of this module, the participant will be able to:
  1. Identify differences between novice, advanced beginner, competent, proficient, and expert levels of practice.
  2. Describe the four components of clinical grasp.
  3. Describe clinical forethought.
  4. Identify ways to help nursing students develop the skills of clinical thinking.
  5. Discuss strategies to help students prioritize their nursing care.


Computer Requirements:
  • Operating system and web browser:
    • Windows XP or 2000 with Internet Explorer 6 or Firefox 1.x, or higher
      OR
